In 1935, Balthus, 27, put himself in the name of “king of cats” in a self portrait. His right arm waited in the picture, his collar was held in his left hand, and a plump cat on his foot rubbed his knee with his head. From an early age, Balthus’s artistic world and real life have become indissoluble bonds with cats. At the age of 8, he and his cat became the model of the mother Elizabeth’s watercolors.
