Matrixes from structures such as cartilage, bone, salivary stones, and urinary tract stones have been studied and demonstrated to be composed of mucin substances called mucus, mucin, mucin, mucopolysaccharides, and glycoproteins. The bile tree secretes a similar mucous substance that has been shown to constitute the matrix of gallstones. The authors report one case of biliary obstruction secondary to “matrix stones.” There have been numerous reports in the literature on urinary calculi that have been composed primarily of stroma consisting of soft X-ray stones. However, there have been no reports in the literature on the occurrence of matrix gallstones. In all gallstones, a matrix is found regardless of its composition. The amount and structure of the matrix, with the crystal
