《白虎通》说:“块,环之不周也。”《广雅》说:“块如环,缺而不连。”这是古人对玉块的形象描述。“满者为环,缺者为玦。”块又通缺,形如环而有缺口。玉器在形制上有缺口就被定为块,也就是我们常说的开口为块,它最主要的标志就是有一缺口,可为什么红山先人们要把一个完整的玉环割开一个缺口呢?在红山文化中,玉块究竟是做什么用的呢?块的佩戴示意图:
