素有改革进取精神和革命斗争传统的长沙,是辛亥革命的重点地区之一。这里产生了与伟大革命先驱孙中山并称的卓越领袖黄兴;黄兴和宋教仁、陈天华、谭人凤、蒋翊武、秦毓鎏、吴禄贞、刘揆一、刘道一、焦达峰、杨毓麟等全国著名的革命家曾在这里从事革命活动;而20世纪初至1911年长沙所发生的一系列革命事件,在全省乃至全国都起了重大作用;更有大批长沙籍革命志士,追随孙、黄,前赴后继,在长沙或全国其他地区的反清革命斗争中,作出了重要的贡献。
