黄瓜在生长发育过程中，外界条件的适宜与否，往往可以通过植株长相反映出来。不良的环境条件可能引起植株生长异常，但异常的长相还可能是由于病虫害引起的。所以，能够正确地判断植株的各个时期的长相，找出异常植株产生的原因，对制定正确的措施加以调整，从而保证黄瓜健壮生长和丰产有着十分重要的意义。
