This article discusses the possibility of using an inertial-assisted ranging technique for a missile guidance system. This technique uses a data processing algorithm that estimates the distance and variability of offshore targets based on the best estimate theory that can not be directly measured in some cases. This algorithm is designed using an ideal analytical model of the system dynamics and sensor error sources and is done by calculating the root mean square distance and variability associated with it. Some sensitivity analysis results presented in this paper are used to illustrate the effects of the target maneuver characteristics, the amplitude of the measured noise and the peak height of the trajectory.
