因病医治无效,于2013年1月20日17时19分在北京协和医院逝世。在不少人眼中,于是之是最富于北京味和平民气质的表演大师,是“人艺”风格的开创者、奠基人和老一辈掌舵者之一,是导演焦菊隐倾其心力创立的“北京人艺演剧学派”的杰出代表。他在《龙须沟》、《骆驼祥子》、《茶馆》等经典作品中,成功塑造了程疯子、老马、王利发等一系列深入人心的舞台艺术形象。于是之亲历了新中国话剧艺术的发展和变革,作为“学者型演员”的实践者,以及“学者型剧院”的贯彻者,他对“人艺演剧学派”的发展更是起到了举足轻重的作用,这都是人所共知的,但不为人所熟悉的是于是之的文采同样令人称道。本刊特选他在21年前为《童超》所作的序,逻辑之清晰,文字之简练可见一斑。以此纪念这位伟大的表演艺术家。
