Vampire arthropods have received attention as vectors for hepatitis B virus. The majority of people in the tropics and elsewhere show evidence of current or past HBV infection, and people in these areas are often exposed to mosquitoes or other arthropods for the rest of their lives. This report examines HBsAg in bloodless bedbugs collected from Senegal’s rural residents in West Africa and found a high prevalence of hepatitis B virus infection. Bed bugs were collected from Senegalese rural huts in four different periods (August 1975, March 1976, September 1976, November 1976).
