An optical fiber can transmit a large amount of communication information, which can transmit video signals, telephone signals, data and control signals to several users at the same time. In this way, the cost of the transmission system can be reduced. To realize this kind of transmission technology, it is necessary to effectively combine the signals of several users onto a common optical fiber for transmission. At the other end, the combined signals are then separated for transmission to the designated subscribers. This is known as wavelength division multiplexing (WDM). The new technology laboratory at Bell Northern Institute has applied this technique to establish a model system. Adopt this kind of technology can introduce integrated service (speech, data and video) more economically into user’s home. Signal Transmission in Optical Fiber Figure 1.a shows the basic method of optical signal transmission. A single light source emits light of a specific wavelength
