浙江平湖人徐调孚(1900—1981),从20年代到70年代做了半个世纪的编辑工作。他平淡的一生中,却在近代以来中国三家主要的出版社,都留下了自己深深的足迹和印痕,也算是少有的佳话。因之他的编辑生涯可以分成三个时期,一是商务印书馆时期,一是开明书店时期,一是中华书局时期。商务印书馆时期为10年。他从旧制中学毕业后考入商务印书馆的英文函授学校部,大约是经人介绍给张元济遂得以补习生资格转入编译所,约在1921年参加编辑《小说月报》,与那时在商务中的沈雁冰、郑振铎、胡愈之、叶圣陶等交往甚密,成了朋友。在郑振铎主编《小说月报》时,他是主要的助手,并成为文学研究会的会员,郑离任去欧洲游历,留下
