A study released January 11 showed that the speed of nicotine metabolism may determine which smoking cessation best suited to addicts. According to the authors of the study, the majority of drug addicts who want to quit smoking but give up on the first week, it is particularly important to choose the most appropriate therapy for their situation. Previous surveys found that smoking addiction was related to the concentration of enzymes used to metabolize nicotine, CYP2A6. The sooner nicotine is metabolized, the more likely it is for addicts to smoke again, and the more difficult it is to quit smoking. Scientists in the United States and Canada use biomarkers, the rate at which CYP2A6 metabolizes nicotine, to determine whether nicotine patches or non-nicotine replacement medications called “Champix” are more effective at quitting smoking.
