Dubliners, James Joyce’s long-established collection of short stories, used the combination of realism and symbolism to successfully reproduce the Irish colonial situation of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Among them, “Light” represents many intentions in the novel “Dublinians”, not only as symbols of Dublin’s false hopes, but also of the miserable reality of Berliner’s dual oppression by colonizers and churches.
