In the late 1980s, the U.S. Department of Defense proposed improvements to the M198 howitzer that required the howitzer to be lighter, more stable and more mobile. BAE Systems eventually won the contract for the design using titanium castings. This is also the first time that titanium castings have been used in ground artillery.
