In the 1990s, the issue of oil-water emulsification in the large Saudi Arabian oilfield increased significantly. Oil-water separation problems make the separator short-circuit, such as equipment tripping accidents continue to occur, and the amount of demulsifier continues to increase. In a comprehensive study, a new oil-water separation index used to determine emulsion stability was used to quantify water, temperature, shear, asphaltene content, demulsifier usage, and blend of different crude oils. The results show that the asphaltene content of crude oil and oil-water separation index or emulsion strength has a great relationship.
