Yan Lianke, a Chinese writer, obtained the Franz Kafka Prize on October 22 in the municipal administration hall of Prague, the capital of Czech Republic. This is the first time that the Franz Kafka Literature Prize was awarded to a Chinese writer for 14 years since it was founded.
The presentation speech goes, “During two thousand years, countless magical facts and scenes happened in China. Being engaged in writing for years, Yan Lianke has been keeping looking for contradictions in Chinese fate since the 20th Century. He has sharp criticism and observational ability of the reality. What is the most important is that he has the courage to face the reality. ”
Franz Kafka Prize is one of the most influential literature prizes of Europe with prize money of USD 10,000. The prize was founded by Franz Kafka Association and Prague Government in 2001. All the previous winners are world-class writers including Philip Roth, and Haruki Murakami. On the award ceremony, Yan Lianke gave a speech called The Heaven and Life Choose the Person Feeling Darkness, recalling his own stories and stories of this era.
