Objective To observe the effect of vitamin C and vitamin E on the endothelium-dependent relaxation of brachial artery in patients with essential hypertension by ultrasound. Methods The subjects included 20 hypertensive patients and 20 normal subjects taking vitamin C and vitamin E12 respectively. Before and after 12 months of treatment, high resolution ultrasound was used to measure resting hyperemia after rebleeding with sublingual nitroglycerin Arterial diameter, and calculated reactive hyperemia and nitroglycerin-induced percentage change in diameter. Results Before and after reactive hyperemia, the percent change of the internal diameter of brachial artery in hypertensive group was significantly lower than that in normal group (P <0.001). The percent change of brachial artery diameter induced by nitroglycerin had no significant difference between hypertensive group and normal group. After taking vitamin C and vitamin E for 12 months, the percentage change of internal diameter of brachial artery in hypertensive patients before and after reactive hyperemia was significantly higher than that before treatment (P <0.001). But nitroglycerin-induced brachial artery diameter percentage change rate no significant change. Conclusion Taking vitamin C and vitamin E can improve the impaired endothelium-dependent vasodilatation in hypertensive patients.
