20世纪30年代初,刚刚发难不久的左翼文学不但遭到了国民党御用文人充满敌意的贬斥、攻击和诬蔑,还受到了自由主义知识分子要求“看货色”的强烈质疑。发难期的左翼文学之所以备受质疑是因为其创作实绩比较贫弱,而造成这种贫弱的原因在于:文学对政治的依附和政治意识形态对文学的侵蚀,国内外无产阶级文艺运动的偏颇的影响,尤其是左翼作家自身薄弱的才艺的限制。发难期的中国左翼文学是世界左翼文艺思潮的一个有机组成部分,尽管它还不成熟,但它具有鲜明的介入社会、政治、人生的意识形态性质,其影响已经远远超出了其自身的文学价值,也使它获得了与其艺术成就并不相匹配的历史光环。
