In Japan, the number of work-related deaths was 1,658 in 2002, 132 more than in 2001 (a decrease of 7.4%), including 51 in manufacturing (by 15.6%) and 37 in construction (by 5.7%). The death toll has been below 2,000 for five consecutive years since 1998. In 2002, the number of people who stopped work more than four days due to work-related accidents was 125,918, a decrease of 7,700 (about 6%) over 2001, with about half of them belonging to manufacturing and construction
