《丛林中的艰苦岁月》是一部自传性的随笔集,该作品出版至今已有一个半世纪,在加拿大文学史上享有经典名作之誉,在整个英语文学中也占有一席之地,非常值得加拿大文学爱好者去细读和研究。该作品记录了加拿大早期移民作家苏珊娜·穆迪离开英国前往加拿大,进入丛林拓荒到最后离开丛林的经历。从这本随笔集中,读者能够明显地感受到在经历了与环境的冲突,与他人的冲突以及与自我的冲突之后,穆迪夫人的身份发生了明显的变化。本文借助拉康的镜像理论,从精神分析的文学批评视角,分析苏珊娜·穆迪在《丛林中的艰苦岁月》中的身份认同,从而了解加拿大早期移民在拓荒期间是如何面对身份的转变,以及如何在异国他乡建构自我身份的。
The Hard Years in the Jungle is an autobiographical essay collection that has been published for over a century and a half.
