Global chemical production increased from only 1 million tons in 1930 to 400 million tons today. There are more than 100,000 chemicals registered in the EU alone. The world chemical output value is about 1.5 trillion U.S. dollars each year, of which 75% of the output comes from the member countries of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development. The EU and the U.S. chemical industry account for nearly 60% of the world’s output. In 2005, China’s chemical production value surpassed that of Germany to become the third largest chemical in the world
