郑杭生先生一直重视作为社会学学科基础构成部分的中国社会思想史的研究,在组织撰写《中国社会思想史新编》一书的过程中,他应用社会运行理论的知识视角,来诠释中国传统文化典籍中有关治乱盛衰的内容,通过意义的发现、阐明、转换,使有关治乱盛衰的内容有机镶嵌在社会运行的理论框架中。这样,社会运行理论成为社会思想史的知识框架与理论范式,而中国社会思想史成为社会运行理论的实在内容,通过综合考量某个社会精英或学术流派的思想学说和行动主张,逻辑呈现他们如何以社会运行与社会秩序为中心,从不同角度、不同层面回应社会问题,进而展开去乱求治的理性思考,从而使社会运行论与传统社会思想达到互构共契。郑杭生先生的这种努力把中国社会思想史的研究推向了一个新境界。
