According to the preliminary statistics of Swiss Re’s sigma research and analysis report, in 2002, a total of 19,000 people died of natural disasters and man-made disasters. In addition to personal losses, the financial losses caused by major events are about 40 billion U.S. dollars, of which the insurance industry needs to bear about 12 billion U.S. dollars losses. After a major economic loss in 2001, the economic losses caused by the catastrophic events recovered in 2002 to be close to the average of previous years. However, catastrophic losses are still the greatest threat, as evidenced by the European floods.
