葫芦器制作是明末出现的一种工艺,而押花葫芦则是又一种艺术表现,出现于康熙。押花葫芦,又叫掐花、砑花葫芦。就是用坚质纯刃的工具,在葫芦表面通过按押产生浮雕般的花纹。押花工艺不同于一般的雕刻,雕刻是将葫芦的皮质刻去,而押花却没有刻损皮质,纹理的产生并不见丝毫的斧凿痕迹。以这种变化丰富的印痕便可表现各种人物、花卉、走兽、山水。现在所见实物有少量带“康熙赏玩”款识的,但真正形成流派,名家辈出,还是在晚清民国时期。
