约瑟夫·沃伦·史迪威是位与中国有着不解之缘的美国将军。早在1911年11月,他就曾到上海度假,那是他的第一次中国之旅。九年后,他奉命到中国工作。1935年至1939年,他担任美国驻华武官参赞,其足迹遍及中国各地。因此,他被美国军界称为“最精通中国和远东问题的军官”。太平洋战争爆发后,他奉命前来中国,作为罗斯福总统的驻华军事代表,开始履行其职业军人的历史使命。不过,在中国的日子里,他与蒋介石之间充满了矛盾与龃龉。
Joseph Warren Stilwell is a U.S. general who has indissoluble links with China. As early as November 1911, he had gone to Shanghai on vacation, which was his first trip to China. Nine years later he was ordered to work in China. From 1935 to 1939, he served as Counselor for the U.S. Attache to China and traveled all over China. Therefore, he was described by the U.S. military as the “officer most knowledgeable about China and the Far East.” After the outbreak of the Pacific War, he was ordered to come to China as President Roosevelt’s military representative to China and to fulfill the historical mission of his professional soldiers. However, during the days of China, he was full of contradictions and covetousness with Chiang Kai-shek.
