南口战役是抗战初期北战场的一次重大战役。第13军抢防南口,以少应多,以弱抑强,战斗极为惨烈,危机四伏,急待援军。卫立煌率部以3师之众支援南口抗战,在平西山地与日军缠斗20日之久,拖住了日军第6、第20两个师团的主力,威胁了第5师团的侧背,减轻了南口正面的压力。卫立煌纵队增援南口抗战是南口战役的重要组成部分。
