郑怀兴的《神马赋》为戏曲文学中罕见的气氛诡异、主题多义、结构复杂的作品。它以神马为篇名,但神马始终都未露出真容,仅有一次,是出现在李芳娘的梦境中,虽然呈现于舞台,但那已是李氏的心像了。心像是主观的产物,是缥缈朦胧的。老乳娘和仆人阿九对神马也有过描述,但仅限于间接的言说,且幻觉和有意编造的嫌疑很大,也是主观的,神马真身并未显露。
