20世纪新诗理论的发展变化,也与一般诗学文化的变迁一样,大致循着这样两条不同的途径——第一条是按本民族诗学文化自身发展的内在逻辑而变迁,即在拓展、深化、推进自己固有的东西中,诞生新的因子。第二条是在外来诗学文化影响之下的变迁,也就是说引进自己诗学传统中从未有过的新鲜东西。在这种情况下,外来的诗学文化不仅仅以其新的内容、新的形态进入了本民族诗学文化,更重要的还在于起了一种酵母和催化的作用,促使本民族诗学文化在内容、格局与形式上都产生前所未有的变异。
