Cilia are hair-like organelles that protrude from the surface of many types of eukaryotic cells.Each cilium possesses a microtubule-based central core,known as the axoneme,sur-rounded by the ciliary membrane.Ciliogenesis is a multi-step pro-cess that typically involves vesicle transport to the centrosome,maturation of the mother centriole into a basal body,docking of the basal body onto the plasma membrane,and extension of the axoneme from the basal body[1].The axoneme serves as the track for the bidirectional movement of diverse protein complexes via intraflagellar transport(IFT),a motor protein-driven process essen-tial for cilium assembly and maintenance[2].Cilia are critical in many biological processes;motile cilia beat rhythmically and mainly function in cell locomotion and fluid transport,whereas non-motile primary cilia act as antennae for sensing extracellular signals[1].Consistent with the diverse roles of cilia,defects in their structure and/or function are associated with a variety of human diseases,collectively called ciliopathies[1].A better understanding of cilium assembly may help to decipher the pathogenesis of cil-iopathies and design new strategies for disease diagnosis and therapy.
