Objective To investigate the changes and clinical significance of serum Vaspin levels in obese and type 2 diabetic patients (T2DM). Methods Forty-five newly diagnosed T2DM patients and 42 normal glucose tolerance (NGT) patients were divided into normal weight (NW) and obese (OB) subgroup according to body mass index (BMI) respectively. The level of Vaspin in fasting serum was determined by ELISA. Results Serum Vaspin levels in T2DM-OB group and NGT-OB group were significantly higher than those in NGT-NW group (P <0.01). Vaspin was significantly correlated with gender, BMI, WC, WHR, FIns, HOMA-IR, TG and HDL-C Gender, BMI and WHR were independent factors. Conclusion Vaspin may play a role in the development of obesity, insulin resistance and T2DM.
