1944年9月5日,忠实地为人民服务的共产党员张思德,在陕北安塞山中烧炭时,因炭窑崩塌而牺牲。9月8日毛泽东同志在中共中央直属机关为追悼张恩德同志举行的追悼大会上,作了《为人民服务》的重要讲话,号召全党全军和全国人民学习并发扬张思德全心全意为人民服务的革命精神。 张恩德,1915年4月19日,出生在四川省仪陇县六合乡的韩家湾。乳名“谷娃子”。张恩德是在苦水里泡大的,他在困苦的生活中熬过了14个年头,天天盼望着穷人啥时候才能翻身站起来,有个出头的日子。
