Due to certain factors, the English teaching and learning in minority areas still lags behind other areas. The failure is believed to result from many factors, such as history, economics, circumstance, teaching methodologies and learning strategies. This study investigates the minority non-English majors at Xichang College in Sichuan Province in order to understand their willingness to increase learner autonomy and their existing level of autonomous English learning. The data was collected from questionnaires, classroom observations, and students' English proficiency tests. The results show that some students have a positive attitude towards learner autonomy and express a willingness to study autonomously, but their level of autonomous English learning is average.Based on the factors, this thesis suggests some possible countermeasures for the English teachers teaching in minority areas, which enables non-English majors there to construct their own knowledge systems and improve their abilities of autonomy in English learning process.
