In modern England, there existed the phenomenon of “selling wife”. The reasons for this phenomenon of “selling his wife” existing in the lower social strata include the following: First, the Christian Church considers marriage sacred and opposes divorce. The second is the high cost of divorce through the bill of parliament, which is unacceptable to ordinary people. Once again, the British custom has the force of law in the lower classes. The practice of selling a wife as a habit of the lower classes of the United Kingdom is a practice they have taken to circumvent Christian churches’ prohibition of divorce and the high cost of divorce in parliamentary courts. With the change of the social status of women and the improvement of social awareness, divorce has been accepted by more and more people. As a habit in Britain, “selling his wife” gradually disappears into the long stream of history.
