When used to detect and classify image features, the use of infrared sensing systems to predict their performance requires evaluation of the image signals from the source and background generated sensors. This process includes assessing the effects on the system performance of the detector, the scanning system (if used) and the optical system under certain circumstances. Sensor performance analysis needs to consider the source and background radiation characteristics, and is generally assumed to be an extension source. For certain tasks, in addition to the radiation characteristics, the dimensions of the source must be considered in determining the contrast of the scene produced by the source. The requirement for a source representation size is due to a reduction in the image contrast of a radiation source exhibiting small size due to optical blur during imaging. In this paper, the effects of source size, instantaneous field of view of detector and optical blur on image contrast of imaging infrared sensor are analyzed.
