Many types of monoterpenoids have been isolated from the roots of Paeonia lactiflora. One of these is PF. PF has the pharmacological effects of lowering blood pressure, dilating blood vessels, and relaxing and inhibiting smooth muscle movement and tonic spasm. The authors have reported that PF can produce three kinds of peony metabolites I-III (PMI-III) after the action of human intestinal bacteria, and found that the main metabolite PM-I has stronger anticonvulsant effects on animals than PF. PM-I is a mixture of (7R)- and (7S)-isomers, and it was reported herein that PM-I was quantified using an enzyme immunoassay (EIA).
