数字在人们的生活中可以说无处不在, 在语言表达上同样是无孔不入。首先从一说起。英美人似乎很自大,总是把“我”大写成I,这个大写的I也可说成number one(或No. 1),即自我。人有四肢,如果四肢着地爬行就是“go on all fours”。有时候事情会乱得一团糟, 于是英语中就有“at sixes and sevens”。人一喝醉,丑态百出,这情景单用一个drunk是难以形容的,于是用语中就有了have one over the eight(酩酊大醉)的说法,这似乎让人看到八个醉鬼醉倒在一张饭桌底下的情景。下面再举一些例子:
