Objective: To investigate the tendency and preference of college students in seeking help in handling problems. Methods: Undergraduates (n = 466) from two universities in Beijing and Shanghai were studied by questionnaire. Results: College students tend to solve problems by themselves, and when necessary, they seek help from their parents or friends. The relatively low rates of access to professional counseling are available only to a very small number (7.8%) of students who seek psychiatrists for insomnia or severe psychological distress. Although female students tend to seek help slightly more than male students, they resort mainly to their parents and less to psychiatrists. The nature of the problem is an important factor in determining the target of seeking help. Distrust of mental health professionals is a hurdle to asking for help. Conclusion: College students prefer to turn to informal social networks (parents or friends) for help. Formal counseling or mental health services are not fully utilized by undergraduates, and professional reputation and image are needed.
