唐朝时期,狄仁杰和娄师德共同当任朝廷大臣时,狄仁杰经常排斥娄师德。一天,武则天责问狄仁杰:“我任用你,你知道是什么原因吗?”狄仁杰回答说:“我是靠文才和正直的品德受朝廷的重用,不是靠别人来成就自己的事业。”武则天停了一会儿说:“我并不完全了解你。你得到朝廷的厚遇,实在是由于娄师德的推荐。”并且让人拿出十多本推荐人才的奏本给狄仁杰看。狄仁杰看完以后,心里不安,承认了过失。后来,狄仁杰逢人便说:“我没想到会被娄师德所包涵,而娄师德却不曾露出骄傲之色。”
