According to the USDA’s analysis and forecast, because of the economic recession in Japan and the current weak currency, Japan’s feed grain imports will decline significantly in the coming months. In the meantime, the demand for wheat and rice is expected to increase as the Japanese have the potential to reduce their consumption of expensive animal products such as meat and eggs. Another chain reaction brought by the devaluation of the yen is that Southeast Asian efforts to try to strengthen its export to Japan will be hit hard. Southeast Asian countries have had much hope in the Japanese market because of their economic difficulties. In the meantime, China’s domestic demand for feed grains will grow extremely slowly, making China appear as an exporter on the international corn market.
