A simplified method that can be applied to the assessment of the probability risk of low-level waste disposal systems has been developed based on the probability of failure of the disposal system. The shallow burial ditch can be thought of as a system of quadruple barriers. The total failure probability of the system can be calculated from the failure probability of these single barriers. The possible release rates of radionuclides can be estimated as a function of time. 1. Introduction Various approaches have been proposed so far for the disposal of low level radioactive waste, such as shallow burial, engineering facilities disposal and cave disposal. Shallow burials are the simplest of many disposal options and have been adopted by some countries since the 1940s. Recently, the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has become shallow for low-level radioactive waste
