In the 1970s and 1980s, the United States produced a series of standards on aircraft survivability requirements. This article attempts to provide a preliminary analysis of these criteria to illustrate the position of aircraft survivability throughout its lifecycle, its implications for all aspects of aircraft design, and the need to establish an aircraft survivability outline.
