五四运动刚发生的时候,正在上海闭门著述的孙中山并不怎么在意发生在北京的这场学生运动。“六三”以后,五四运动的重心转移到了上海,学生罢课、商人罢市、工人罢工,这些事情就发生在孙中山的身边。常有学生上门邀请他参加集会、演讲,但都被孙中山婉言谢绝了。直到6月17日,在中华全国学生联合会的盛情邀请下,孙中山才在上海寰球学生会发表了他有关五四的第一篇演讲。这种迟迟而来的表态其实源于孙中山当时所处的一种特殊心
