Linking aging, intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDDs) in research, policy and practice can improve the quality of life of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities as well as adults with disabilities due to aging. Both groups have both personalized and common needs in terms of health and long-term service and support. This article discusses research in two fields, ways to intervene, and ideas for policy development in the field. The main areas of communication are health promotion and home care interventions. Methods of intervention that can be borrowed from the field of aging for the development of intellectual and developmental disorders include chronic disease self-management, fall protection, dementia care, retirement planning and hospice. The American community life management project is a typical case of policy convergence in the two areas of aging and disability.
