Aged a few years ago, the elder James Arruda Henry remained illiterate. When he was in his 90s, he began to learn to read and published his autobiography when he was almost a hundred years old. Born in Portugal, with his parents immigrating to the United States, Henry dropped out of school in the third year of primary school, worked as a construction worker, worked as a baker, practiced boxing, and later reared lobster at sea.
