Asia is almost dominating the global LNG trade. Between 1980 and 1994, LNG trade in Asia always accounted for about three-quarters of the world’s total LNG trade. The global LNG trade grew at an average annual rate of 7.8%. Asia’s LNG trade grew at an average annual rate of 8.4%. As a result, Asia’s share of LNG trade in the world increased from 72.5% in 1980 to 1994 More than 77%. At present, more than 91% of the Asian LNG trade in Asia comes from within the region and is in a generally regional self-sufficient situation. Only Japan imports a small amount of LNG from the Middle East and North America. The world can be divided into Asia, Europe and the United States three distinct LNG markets.
