十九世纪四、五十年代,英国出现了狄更斯、萨克雷、夏洛蒂·勃朗特和盖斯凯尔夫人等“一派出色的小说家”。马克思指出“他们以明白畅晓和令人感动的描写向世界揭示了政治的和社会的真理,比起政治家、政论家和道德家合起来所做的还多。”在这些小说家中,盖斯凯尔夫人没有狄更斯的善于铺设悬念、编故事的优势;也没有萨克雷的那种刻画人物入木三分、极尽讽刺、幽默的功力,但她也自有她的“出色”之处。她的“出色”之处就是她的创作的现实性。她的现实性主要表现在:
