This article describes a two-level four-level condition detector, which is a constant false alarm rate detector. In this paper, its performance and single-stage (fixed sample size) four-level condition detector performance is compared. In a limited sampling comparison, the noise is assumed to have Rice probability density function, which is the probability density function at the output of the radar receiver envelope detector when the background noise is Gaussian white noise. Asymptotic comparison, asymptotic relative efficiency is defined and its expression is given. Both finite and asymptotic results show that in the absence of signal, the average sample size can be significantly reduced. Thus, the two-stage detector is suitable for signal detection in the absence of signal assuming a high prior probability.
