Wallace Stevens is one of the most important modernist poets in the United States. The use of images is a prominent feature of his poetry. Some major images appear repeatedly and recombine to form a relatively stable symbolic system. They not only constitute the main body of poetry, but also constantly reinforce the nearly unique theme of Stevens’ poetry-the relationship between imagination and reality. These opposing dichotomous images include: South and North, the sea and music, statues and wilderness, color and darkness. They represent the dual nature of human nature. Southern China, the sea, the wilderness, the green, etc. represent the images of nature, sensibility, passion and material life. The north, music and blue represent the imagination, creative behavior and rational forces of the people. These images, which conflict with each other and permeate each other, are contradictory and mutually supportive, and are the two indispensable forces that make up our world.
