甘谷县位于甘肃省陇东南地区,自古以来就是古丝绸之路,渭河上游的一个重要军事、商贸、文化重镇。秦武公十年(公元年前688年),西伐冀戎,始置冀县(今甘谷县)。县城西五华里有大象山,山形如卧象,西低东高,自西至东由象尾至象头迤逦升高,在山脊一线留存有众多的古石窟建筑群。该山相对高度并不高,但甚为陡峭,尤其是在象头位置更是悬崖突兀,在此间开凿有巨大石窟一座,留有盛唐时所塑大佛一尊,身高23.3米,为全国文物保护单位。甘谷县历史上文化昌盛,文人墨客灿若星辰,境内遗存文物众多,尤以大象山
