The two essays here are an essay on early films by the great Russian writers Gorky and Leo Tolstoy. Gorky’s article was published in the second year after the movie was first born and chronicles his strong feelings in the midst of the movie. Gorky had foreseen that new scientific invention that year and would be used by the capitalists to sell some obscene, boring stuff. This vision has been confirmed by more than 80 years of film history. In his talk at the beginning of the twentieth century, Leo Tolstoy predicted that this technically crude “little artist” would bring a “revolution to the life of writers”. Tolstoy highly appreciates the expressiveness of cinema art and points out the film’s special abilities in dealing with certain themes. These two short essays, appearing in the appendix to American film theorist Jay Leda, “The History of Film - History of Russian and Soviet Cinema” (1973 Edition), appear to be published as early historical films. Today, films have been transformed from audio-visual “gray” gadgets that “can not be heard” into audio-visual color films, and the means of expression they possess have also been greatly enriched, but the great writers, with their keen insight The opinions expressed by the force still have reference value.
