Monocytes are precursors of macrophages in the circulatory system, and monocytes differentiate into macrophages after circulating from the bloodstream into the tumor cells. The process by which monocytes aggregate and differentiate to form tumor-associated macrophages is regulated by signaling molecules released by the tumor or its metastases.
